We hope your Holidays were great!  By the time you receive this, we hope there is snow on the ground and we are all riding!  Some things to remember:

-Always ride between the sticks – STAY ON THE TRAIL

-Stay off non-marked Private and Public Property

-Don’t park your sled at road crossings

-Don’t park on the downside of a blind hill

-Be considerate of others on the trail

-Never drink alcohol or take drugs and ride

-Leave the aftermarket pipe at home-loud exhaust closes trails

-Always be an Ambassador for the sport

For those that don’t ride, you may be their only contact with snowmobilers and your actions will be perceived as the actions of ‘all snowmobilers’, good or bad.

We will be hosting the NYS Snowmobile Safety Class on January 23rd and 26th at the Shawnee Fire Hall.  This is a 2 day class; attendance at both is required to get a certificate.  Students should arrive by 4:30 p.m. on the 23rd to accomplish paperwork.  Class starts at 5:00 p.m. both evenings and will run until 9 p.m.  Students should bring snacks.  Soft drinks will be provided by the club.  We encourage parents to attend with their children.  Class is open to anyone 10 years of age and older.  Pre-registration is required.  Contact Rodger at 731-2174 or Gary at 731-1719.

If you are interested in becoming a New York State Certified Snowmobile Safety Instructor, please call Rodger (731-2174) or Gary (731-1719) for info.

Trail Update:  We still have some sections of trail that need to be managed by a Trail Captain.  Duties include securing landowner permissions and organizing trail builds/maintenance/trail teardowns.  To ensure our trail system continues to improve, please consider helping out.  If you would be willing to learn more about trail captain responsibilities, please call Pete at 791-8609.

You should have received 2 separate editions of the New York Snowmobiler Magazine along with issues of Supertrax Magazine this season.  NYSSA is always looking for ride/travel articles-if you have a story about riding in the state, please send it (and pictures) to nyssaoffice@nysnowmbiler.com.  If you are don’t want to write it, provide as much information as you can and NYSSA will craft an article.  NYSSA also provides a monthly Online Magazine 12 months per year with a lot of useful information.  They can be found here:  http://www.nysnowmobiler.com/nyssa-magazines

If you plan to trailer/drop at the Shawnee Fire Hall, make sure to use the ‘Drop Zone’ designated by signs (by the baseball backstop).  Don’t ride in the parking lot-carbides cut through the blacktop.  On Wednesday Nights (Bingo Nights), do not take up several parking spaces in the rear lot-long rigs can be parked on the sides of the access road on the west side of the hall (don’t block traffic).

The NYSSA Annual Spring Forum and Business Meeting will be held in Lake Placid, N.Y. April 20-22, 2012.  This event includes many classes designed to help all levels of organization within a club from GPS usage to discussions on motivating volunteers to legal tax status changes.  On Sunday the 22nd is the Annual NYSSA business meeting where the clubs set the course for NYSSA to follow for the year, approving budget and by-law changes, etc.  If you would be interested in representing the Shawnee Sno-Chiefs as a delegate, please call Brent at 523-2320.  We will be discussing our representation at our upcoming club meetings.

Do you know an individual, family, groomer operator or snowmobile dealership that you feel goes above and beyond, year after year?  Do you want to recognize them?  The Club?  NYSSA has their annual awards program, designed to recognize those outstanding contributors to snowmobiling each year.  Award applications can be found at www.nysnowmobiler.com/annual-meeting/awards.  Anyone can make nominations-all nominations must be received by the NYSSA Office by March 1st.

Are you or your kids going to college?  NYSSA offers 2 scholarships each year to deserving member students.  Additionally, all application packages are sent to the Northeast Chapter of Snowmobile Associations (each state in the Northeast) and they can also be sent to the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA-the national level association) for consideration.  Everyone knows an education is expensive and these scholarships can help.  More info is available here:  www.nysnowmobiler.com/annual-meeting/scholarships and also here:  www.snowmobilers.org.   Again, applications must be received by March 1st.

Would you like to save money on your sled insurance?  Get discounted hotel room stays?  Save money on a Car rental?  These and many other discounts are available to our members.  NYSSA has secured discounts from many companies and businesses for you.  A list of all these discounts can be found here:  www.nysnowmobiler.com/images/pdf/Discounts-Page-Rev-6-11.pdf

The new groomer is here and ready for operations-we need more operators to keep the trials in good shape!  We are in need of nighttime and daytime groomer operators-if you are willing and able to learn to drive and maintain our groomer, please call Herb Stephenson at 523-1242 for maintenance and Paul at 743-9623 to get on the schedule.

Did you know that the Groomer(s) have the right of way at all times on the trail system?  This is the law in New York State.  If you approach a groomer from behind, do not pass until the Operator has stopped or pulled off and has signaled you to pass.  Please make sure to say thanks to the groomer operators-they make the trails safe and flat-and to do that, they are giving up time with their families and time away from sledding.

New Shawnee Sno-Chiefs logo clothing is available to order at each meeting-and we’ve made these fine clothing items more affordable.  These are high quality items with the club name and logo stitched in-Sweatshirts, Long Sleeve T-shirts, Short Sleeve T-shirts, and Polo shirts.  The come in a choice of colors and sizes.  Please come to a meeting and see these items.  Sno-Chiefs Logo wear must be pre-ordered and pre-paid.
